What is MERCURY?
Mercury is the only metal that dwells in the form of liquid which has
various uses for different purposes. It is denoted by “Hg” in the periodic
table of chemistry. Apart from that, Mercury is found in the following forms:
1. Organic Mercury.
2. Inorganic Mercury.
USES OF MERCURY:
Mercury is used in various measuring instruments like a barometer,
thermometer as well as other scientific instruments. Moreover, mercury is also
found in electric appliances like in fluorescent bulbs, screens, and other
electronic components. Besides being a useful metal, mercury has hazardous
effects on the human body as well as on our environment. In this article, we
will discuss the disastrous effects of toxic metal.
DISADVANTAGES OF MERCURY:
Here is the list of some harmful impact of mercury:
1. HEALTH EFFECTS:
Mercury’s open exposure can be very harmful as it can bring several
health disorders. The vapors of mercury can be very dangerous when somebody
inhales as its harmful fumes can affect his/her nervous systems like the brain,
kidney, or heart. Moreover, it also causes other health effects due to inhaling
mercury like the feeling of anxiety, and irritation; not sleeping well, and loss
of appetite are the detrimental consequences of mercury.
2. POLLUTES THE ENVIRONMENT:
Even a small amount of mercury can also pollute our surroundings as
it is an easy vaporizing metal. With the rising of little temperature, it
reacts with the air which rapidly contaminates the air and can cause toxic results
for living species.
3. SKIN DAMAGE:
Nowadays, beauty is being given much priority over anything else,
and for that most people use different fairness creams which can damage their skin
as fairness creams contain a small amount of mercury that reacts with their skin
and can be caused of damaging their skin.
4. FREEZING POINT
Another disadvantage of mercury is that, it is unable to measure
low temperature as mercury freezes at -37.894 °F (-38.83 °C), and therefore cryometer (a type of
thermometer containing alcohol) is usually used to measure low temperatures.
CONCLUSION:
Thus, Mercury, along with being one of the useful metals is a hazardous
metal for living things as well as for habitat. Its open exposure has toxic
outcomes. So, these were the disadvantages which were discussed in the article.
